Meditation is a practice involving clearing your mind and becoming deeply absorbed by focusing on a specific thing or thought.
There are many different variations of meditation including Mindfulness meditation, Centering Prayer meditation, Zazen meditation, Transcendental meditation, and Yoga relaxation. While there is overlap, each variation tends emphasize focusing on a different “something” … e.g., a sound, mantra, candle flame, blank wall, parts of the body as they are relaxed, your breathing, the “here and now,” or on God’s presence within. The techniques as well as the target of focus are usually slightly different as well.
Why meditate? To clear the mind, increase awareness of the present moment, reduce stress, promote relaxation, and to enhance personal and spiritual growth.
